Overview

The Lilacs is a thoughtfully designed housing development in the village of Trimley St Martin, Suffolk. Located between Ipswich and Felixstowe, the 46 new homes have been built to meet the needs of the area, whilst enhancing and respecting the local environment. The site offers a collection of apartments, bungalows, semi-detached and detached houses in varying two, three and four-bedroom residences to suit various lifestyles.

Taylor Maxwell worked with main contractors Aspen Build to supply Hardie® Plank fibre cement cladding and Cadeby Red Multi bricks from our solus range to the Flagship Homes development.

Concept to completion

Flagship Homes wanted to create a site that took inspiration from the character of local buildings, whilst creating a distinct visual identity. By carefully considering the material palette of the village, the Cadeby Red Multi brick from our solus range, with its sanded texture and red colouring, was selected as the main facade material.

Alongside traditional facing brickwork and light-coloured render, nearby developments also featured timber effect fibre cement cladding. Therefore, to complement the local architecture, Flagship Homes chose to incorporate this design feature at The Lilac’s site.

Hardie® Plank fibre cement cladding, manufactured by James Hardie, is a popular alternative to using natural timber cladding due to its A2 fire rating, BBA certification (04/4147) and low maintenance requirements. The planks have an estimated service life in excess of 30 years when installed in accordance with the product’s BBA certificate, offering many benefits over natural timber cladding, which is prone to moisture and pest damage. The design team selected this weatherboard cladding in dark grey to complement and contrast with the red brickwork and cream render used throughout the development.

The Lilacs now stands as a testament to thoughtful design and material selection, blending harmoniously with the surrounding architecture. The new homes exude a timeless quality, appearing as though they have always been a part of the local landscape.
