Overview
Part of the Gallions Quarter masterplan in the Royal Albert Docks, Gallions Place is an elegant and modern mixed-use development which provides the area with 241 new one, two and three-bedroom homes and 1,721sqm of flexible non-residential floorspace. The joint venture between main contractors Vistry Ventures and housing association Notting Hill Genesis is situated at the heart of London’s newest riverside district, Royal Docks.
Designed by PRP Architects, the scheme is comprised of three apartment blocks, ranging from 5 to 11 storeys, completed using facing bricks. Taylor Maxwell worked with the architects and main contractors to supply the different bricks and the precast soffits and lintels used across the facades, in line with the design brief.
Concept
The architects and main contractors provided our team with a design brief ahead of their meeting in our London Bridge showroom to specify the facing bricks used on the development. Taking into consideration the facing bricks supplied to the nearby Great Eastern Quays scheme, our brick specialists put together an offering that would create a sense of cohesion within the area and meet the architect's brief in terms of desired aesthetic. At the end of this meeting a total of six facing bricks in a variety of colours and finishes were chosen for the three apartment blocks.
The Royal Albert Dock regeneration area, previously used for shipbuilding and the maritime industry, is slowly becoming one of London’s most vibrant business hubs and neighbourhood. When designing the development, the architects understood the importance of the historic nature of the site and focused on using warehouse-style materials to mimic its waterfront industrial heritage. The brickwork created using red, grey and white facing bricks, in combination with the cast stone soffits and lintels creates an authentic handcrafted and industrial feel.
Completion
Located at the heart of the regeneration scheme, the mixed-use development is surrounded by new retail, hospitality and upcoming offices to suit all needs. It also provides its new residents with great transport links to The City, Paddington, London Airport and Heathrow through Gallions Reach DLR, situated within walking distance of the buildings.
Construction of the Gallions Quarter masterplan started in Summer 2021 with the aim to provide the area with up to 800 residential units and 2641sqm of commercial space, including necessary alterations to the vehicular and pedestrian layouts and landscaping surrounding areas by early 2023. Gallions Place forms part of Phase 2A, where the scheme focused on creating 145 private sale, 47 affordable rent and 48 shared ownership homes. The apartment blocks have outside space, on-site concierge, fully integrated appliances, underfloor heating, cycle storage and on-site parking (selected apartments).
