Overview
Brigade Court is a striking mixed-use development that seamlessly blends historical restoration with contemporary living in the heart of central London. As the first project from Hadston Southwark Limited, a new joint venture between Goldman Sachs International and Urbanwise Developments, this ambitious scheme delivers a unique residential offering in a prime Zone 1 location, ensuring effortless connectivity across the capital.
Designed by architects ColladoCollins, Brigade Court transforms part of the former Southwark Fire Station into a luxurious residential community. Taylor Maxwell worked with architects and main contractors Ardmore Construction Ltd to specify and supply a variety of facing bricks used across the full development.
Concept
At the heart of Brigade Court’s design was the meticulous restoration of the Grade II listed former fire station, originally built in 1878. This heritage structure, once home to the London Fire Brigade’s headquarters, museum and training facility, has been respectfully refurbished to retain its historic charm while providing elegant modern apartments. Alongside this, a newly constructed ten-storey residential building introduces further contemporary residences set around the original fire station’s landscaped courtyard, creating a cohesive community space.
A carefully curated material palette plays a key role in unifying old and new architectural structures. The development features a selection of red, buff, grey and white facing bricks, chosen to harmonise with the area’s historic streetscape and to meet planning considerations. Red sawtooth brick specials are distributed across the facade, creating eye-catching, dynamic and engaging patterns. By incorporating brickwork that reflects the textures and tones of the surrounding architecture, the development strikes a balance between past and present, ensuring it integrates seamlessly into its historic setting. The new buildings complement the character of the fire station whilst introducing a contemporary aesthetic, celebrating architectural contrast and continuity.

Beyond residential living, the scheme includes the newly built Haberdashers Borough Academy and a 1,300sqm sports centre with multi-use games area for use by both the school and local community. The landscape strategy prioritises biodiversity, with outdoor learning areas for the school and newly designed public spaces for residents and the local community to enjoy. This innovative approach underscores Brigade Court’s commitment to sustainability and community integration.
Completion
Completed in late 2023, Brigade Court delivers an exceptional blend of residential and commercial spaces, featuring a total of 199 beautifully designed apartments and duplexes, 2,500 sqft commercial space and a 1,500 sqft gym. The finished project exemplifies the successful transformation of a historic landmark into a vibrant and modern residential hub.
