Industry Update

  • Glenigan has reported in their latest construction review that whilst project starts dropped 33% during the last three months of 2021, there is a growing number of developments being approved, providing a positive outlook for 2022.
  • The Timber Trade Federation (TTF) have advised its members to cease trading with Russia and Belarus due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This will continue to have a major impact on the trade of timber products, buyers are therefore making contingency plans to prepare for any shortages. The TTF further endorse both the PEFC and FSC decision to reclassify goods from the two countries as ‘conflict timber’, making it ineligible for certification or responsible trade.

Market Update

  • A Horticulture Week article reports that the demand for fencing and landscaping rose by 300% after the recent storms.
  • The Wyre Forest National Nature Reserve is now the largest native woodland in England after being extended by 900 hectares, taking its total cover to 1,455 hectares.
  • Higher energy prices will have significant impacts on the costs of timber harvesting, production, and transportation.
  • Confor warns of a future crisis in wood supply. Demand for UK timber is set to surge in the run up to 2050. Without urgent action to plant more trees in England to produce wood, the UK will struggle to meet net zero targets.

Company Update

Taylor Maxwell is pleased to announce that we have completed the purchase of the Cumbernauld site and three timber treatment plants from PTG Treatments Ltd.

Having used the site for over 10 years we have built a great relationship with PTG and they will remain in situ as the timber treatment providers and running the facility on our behalf. This gives us a significantly increased treatment capacity in a great strategic location which will allow us to reach a wider customer base with both low pressure and high pressure treated timbers. We will continue to work closely with Pete Bamford, Steve Adams and Gerry Scullion to ensure we continue to offer the same excellent service of previous years.

Our facades division at Taylor Maxwell & Co Ltd will be relocating their yard facility from Loanhead to PTG Treatments Ltd, Cumbernauld. This new location will allow us to stock a greater quantity of product and allow us to reach a wider customer base with supply of facing bricks, walling stone, cast stone and our exclusive Stonepanel natural stone cladding.

Fun Fact

Tree v1

The European Tree of the Year for 2022 has been announced as the Oak Dunin in Poland (left). The UK favourite was a lone hawthorn tree in Kippford, Dalbeattie in Dumfries and Galloway, which won UK Tree of the Year 2022 (right).
