Timber Update June 2020

Last month, the Government provided further guidance and set out a road map on how they plan to relax the current lockdown measures, along with encouraging an economic recovery. The construction sector is largely attempting to return to work, with a significant proportion of our customers now back open and all of our suppliers back to production.

• Most UK, Irish, Scandinavian and Baltic sawmills have recommenced production.
• There has been a weakening of the Pound against the Euro and Swedish Crown, which may result in increased prices in the coming weeks and months.
• As a consequence of the current lockdown measures that are in place, there has been a sharp spike in the demand for decking, fencing and sleepers, whilst people at home look to improve their outdoor areas.
• To better understand the effect of Covid-19 on the timber supply chain, the Confederation of Timber Industries (CTI) and its member associations, surveyed their members between 27 April and 6 May 2020 on areas such as returning to operation, stock levels and potential obstacles.
