RIBA award winning Temple Gardens
The regional RIBA award winning Temple Gardens, set on the northern edges of the Mendip Hills in Somerset, has restored and reopened the Grade II listed Temple Inn and provided nine new houses and ten hotel rooms around a communal landscape, transforming the village centre of Temple Cloud.
The development, designed by Cheltenham based architects Archio, utilises multiple facing brick types and projecting cast stone window surrounds, producing a high-quality finish that compliments the local vernacular. The specific design that combined a grey buff and yellow multi stock brick, supplied by Taylor Maxwell, created a distinctive and unique character suited to the local rural landscape.
This development has restored and reopened the pub, bringing new life to the village centre and demonstrating that contemporary architecture, inspired by the vernacular, can achieve design which feels rooted in place without resort to pastiche.
