Project Update: Primrose Street, Alloa
Fantastic progress is being made on site at Primrose Street, a new residential development in Alloa, Scotland by Kingdom Housing Association, which has been designed to support the Clackmannanshire Council’s town centre regeneration plans. By providing the area with 60 one, two and four-person social rented apartments, the number of local community members that can remain in their own homes, particularly the elderly, has been maximised. Taylor Maxwell worked closely with architect Bracewell Stirling and main contractor Campion Homes Ltd to specify and supply a dark grey fibre cement cladding and brown and red facing bricks to this development.
The aesthetic design of the building was chosen with the town’s history in mind. Alloa was developed at a ford and ferry crossing on the River Forth. It expanded rapidly during the industrial revolution and adopted many industries including textiles, ship building, glassware and brewing. The fibre cement cladding and facing brick colours were chosen to give the façade design an industrial look in line with the history of the harbourside area.
During the planning process, experts were approached for advice on dementia-friendly features that could be included in the design to suit the needs of some of the elderly residents. The energy efficient apartments will provide quality assisted living opportunities to the ageing local population through the incorporation of these dementia-friendly features, as well as mobility scooter charging points. It will also provide its future residents with a private car park, convenient access to public transport, services and improved models of care.
The development was designed by Bracewell Stirling and is currently under construction with Campion Homes Ltd. Planning permission for the property was received in May 2019 and due to Covid-19 restrictions work began on the site in July 2020. Final touches are currently taking place, with completion expected shortly. We look forward to seeing the finished development and are excited for the opportunities the housing will bring to the local community of Alloa.
