Brick Making Workshop - London Festival of Architecture 2019

The festival theme for 2019 is 'boundaries', with a core programme of events across the whole of June, selected to bring together and engage the local architectural community and the wider public. Bricks form the boundaries of our buildings and have been the most popular facade material choice for thousands of years.

A large group of individuals, including local architects and the general public, attended our London Bridge showroom on Monday 10 June to learn all about how bricks are manufactured. The presentation, led by our own brick and stone specialists, examined the history of Smeed Dean and the London stock bricks. Originating in 1812, George Smeed collected town ash and mixed it with local chalk and brick earth to create the original London stock bricks that went on to be used on many prestigious London buildings such as Buckingham Palace, The Tower of London and the original Crystal Palace.

The group were then given the chance to create their own personalised facing bricks, clay tiles and clay figurines, with demonstrations led by clay roof tile manufacturer Keymer. The products have now been sent off to be dried and fired in a traditional brick kiln and will be returned to attendees to keep. The sold out event was a huge success with fantastic feedback from all!
